A VISIT TO NACE INTERNATIONAL FOUNDING MALAYSIA SECTION – 8 & 9 May 2017
25 Material Engineering students and 6 lecturers from Universiti Sains Malaysia Engineering Campus went on a visit to the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) International Founding Malaysia Section (FMS), located in Subang Jaya, to expand upon the existing knowledge concerning corrosion, as well as be exposed to examples of the field work of a corrosion engineer, and to get some actual hands-on experience. Mr Ahmad Shamiri Wahab, a level 3 NACE CP technologist from Mach3 Engineering Consultant, gave a lecture on Introduction to Cathodic Protection (CP) and its related theories. A simple CP experiment was conducted after the lecture to allow students to apply what they have learned. An analysis of the results was then shared by Mr Ahmad Shamiri on the information that can be gleaned from the numerical results obtained.
A practical CP demonstration was conducted at NACE FMS CP test field. The problems encountered concerning corrosion that occur on-site was vastly more challenging and different from that learned in books and lectures. Various elements were at play as students were required to combine their basic knowledge concerning corrosion and CP in the field, with various challenges presented to the students which were not taught in class. With the guidance from Mr Ahmad Shamiri and Ms Michelle Lau, a level 4 NACE CP Specialist, they were taught to solve the problems on site and to analyze the readings obtained from various tests. The discussion and analysis of the results were conducted back at the FMS Resource Centre.
After the visit, students are provided a clear image of the challenges and difficulties to expect in the line of a corrosion engineer’s work in the industry. At the same time, more information regarding CP can be obtained. Upon returning to campus, a sharing session was arranged for the students to share their experiences with the rest of the class.
As a conclusion, the visit provided valuable experience especially related to corrosion and cathodic protection (CP) with the hands-on analysis and site CP measurement.
