Mineral development and production must be managed in a responsible manner if we are to obtain these minerals without great damage to the environment. Highly trained engineers and scientists are needed by the minerals industry now and in the future. Mining applies many different branches of science and engineering to understand how minerals can be extracted from the earth. Mineral Resources engineers are primarily responsible for the safe and economic production of the Earth’s minerals. They work with metal ores, coal, oil and industrial minerals such as clays, granites and limestone. Many mines involve surface working in quarries, open pits, underground and strip mines. Mining engineers often manage teams of engineers and others from many different disciplines. Because of this, mineral resources engineering degree are very wide ranging and ideal for careers in engineering management. 

Mineral Resources Engineering programme is unique and target specific markets and groups. The demand for the students has increased from 10 in the early years to 35-40 students a year, currently.


Mineral Resources Engineering curriculum is structured as follows:

•Years 1-2: Basic mathematics, science, mechanics, and computing tools, including introductions to engineering and engineering drawing, basic mathematics/statistics, basic science, and fundamentalcourses in engineering science.

•Year 3: In-depth coverage of engineering science and mineral resources engineering fundamentals in the current focus areas (mineral processing engineering, mining engineering, geology and environmental engineering), and key supporting courses (laboratory and site visits). Students introduced with technical electives for in-depth knowledge in some focus area subjects.

•Year 4: More technical electives that provide depth in the disciplines (include at least one major design project i.e., capstone project), a required course in professional practice.

•              Full-time programme only
•              Minimum 8 semesters (4 years)

•              Lectures will be mainly delivered in English
•              Examination: Bilingual (Bahasa Malaysia & English)

Research forms an important part of the activities for Mineral Resources Engineering. The diverse research activities are conducted by research areas/groups, each being separately operated and funded by various agencies such as those of the Malaysian Governments, industries and international bodies. Academic as well as research staff and postgraduate research students undertake research activities which are applied, experimental and/ or fundamental in nature. With strong and committed postgraduate groups, comprising of PhD and MSc candidates via full-time or part-time research,the MRE postgraduate programme boasts of united and multi-skilled individuals. Current research activities are directed towards areas as below, although other areas are also welcomed:
